Hanover Cottage: A thoughtful adaption of a circa 1836 heritage listed Battery Point cottage.

Nearly a decade after completing a pool and pool house for this family, we were delighted to be invited back to assist with a second stage of works at their heritage-listed 1836 Battery Point cottage. Hanover Cottage has since evolved to meet the needs of a growing family, and the new additions respond thoughtfully to complex heritage and site constraints, enhancing liveability and connection to the garden while honouring the home’s enduring character.

At the heart of the project is a new garden room — a light-filled space that embraces warmth, family, and connection. Operable edges open fully to the garden and pool terrace, blurring boundaries between inside and out and creating a dynamic hub for daily life. Reclaimed materials and subtle detailing celebrate the home’s evolving story, balancing robustness with refinement.

Low-lying and linear in form, the new addition remains distinct yet sympathetic, allowing the original ‘L’-shaped cottage to remain legible from the garden. Every element — from the repurposed bricks and decking to the finely crafted steel and joinery — contributes to a cohesive, enduring whole. The result is a home that feels both deeply familiar and beautifully renewed.
